Ecology

We shape nature & ressources

Environmental sustainability is the cornerstone of the corporate strategy of Schmittenhöhebahn AG in Zell am See – and therefore also a key element of sustainable tourism. As the only EMAS-validated cable car company in Austria, we are voluntarily committed to continuously improving our environmental performance.

We analyse and manage all environmental impacts – from nature and landscape conservation to energy consumption, emissions, wastewater, waste and technical environmental measures. In this way, we actively contribute to harmonising tourism and ecology.

Energy & efficiency

Responsible energy use is key to a sustainable mountain region. Schmittenhöhebahn AG relies on a combination of sustainable energy, in-house generation and consistent efficiency improvements. Our sustainable energy supply is based 100 % on certified green electricity and is complemented by forward-looking, sustainable energy management.

We purchase 100 % green electricity and are continuously expanding our photovoltaic systems:
20 PV systems on 17 buildings generate solar power (approx. 625 kWp, 3,700 m² of module area). Modern building standards, such as the low-energy administration building and the klimaaktiv GOLD-certified staff building, further reduce consumption.

We save around 150,000 kWh annually through heat recovery – and this figure is set to rise, as further measures have already been implemented and additional optimisations are possible. Heat pumps contribute a further 34,000 kWh. Optimised snowmaking systems and the replacement of older snow lances result in savings of 148,500 kWh per year, with regular maintenance and ongoing technical adjustments opening up further savings potential in the future.

In summary:

  • 100 % green electricity
  • Expansion of photovoltaics as a long-term goal
  • Heat and energy savings through modern technology
  • Efficient snowmaking and pump systems – with further savings potential through technical optimisation

Slope management

Slopes not only offer sporting experiences, but also valuable habitats. Our management combines high slope quality with ecological responsibility.

A biodiversity study confirmed that extensively maintained slopes provide habitats for 70 flowering plants and ferns and 34 species of wild bees. This diversity is actively promoted through an adapted summer management concept – grazing, late mowing, no fertiliser.

For winter, we focus on precision: modern GPS snow depth measurement, fleet management and driver training ensure efficient preparation. Only biodegradable hydraulic oil is used in our snow groomers. Snow is produced exclusively from water and air and is returned completely to the natural water cycle.

Focus areas:

  • Promoting biodiversity
  • Precise, energy-saving grooming
  • Gentle snow production in accordance with the „purity law“

Mobility & fleet management

Sustainable mobility and eco-friendly travel are key factors in reducing the burden on the region. Our sustainable mobility concept offers guests attractive alternatives to private transport, including convenient travel by train, bus and free ski bus. Another important component is the Guest Mobility Ticket, which allows free use of public transport in Pinzgau in summer and, in winter, includes the ski bus network and the Pinzgau regional railway via the ski pass.

There are 16 e-charging stations available at the valley stations – a genuine charging station infrastructure in Zell am See that supports climate-friendly travel and facilitates e-mobility. At the same time, we are modernising our vehicle fleet: hybrid snow groomers, an electric Skidoo and the use of alternative fuels are reducing emissions in the long term. The fleet is also supplemented by six electric cars, which are low-emission in daily operation.

From 2026, particularly environmentally friendly shipping will also be possible on Lake Zell – thanks to a fully electric motorboat, which is another important element of our future-oriented mobility approach.

Water & drinking water

Water is one of the most valuable resources in our region – especially during winter operations. That is why we pursue a sustainable water management policy that protects local resources and uses them responsibly.

Nine of our own springs ensure the drinking water supply for all businesses on the mountain. The fresh spring water is regularly tested and also used for catering purposes. For snowmaking, we only use water from regional water sources, which is returned to the water cycle after use. Our own sewer system on the mountain safely discharges wastewater into the public network in Zell am See.

Carbon footprint reporting

transparency and responsibilits

Our greenhouse gas balance is calculated in accordance with the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) and provides transparency regarding direct and indirect emissions. While Scope 1 mainly covers fuel used in slope preparation, emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2) are 0.0 t CO₂e thanks to 100 % green electricity. Scope 3 covers topics such as guest travel and supply chains.

Sustainable procurement

in all areas

We also attach great importance to environmentally conscious behaviour in our purchasing activities. All areas – from technology and sustainable catering to cleaning – are guided by clear ecological criteria.

These include, among other things:

  •  the use of biodegradable hydraulic oils in snow groomers
  • the switch to fluorine-free extinguishing agents
  • a cleaning agent concept in which at least 75 % of the products carry an eco-label (EU Ecolabel or Austrian Ecolabel)
  • preferential cooperation with regional suppliers
  • reduction of packaging and transport routes through large containers and reusable systems

These measures ensure that sustainability is firmly anchored not only in our catering, but in all procurement processes.

Recycling & circular economy

intensive waste management

A functioning circular economy is an essential part of our environmental responsibility – especially with regard to the ecological impact of tourism. The aim is to keep materials in circulation for as long as possible, use resources efficiently and implement holistic, sustainable waste management.
We rely on modern systems and clearly structured processes that enable high-quality recycling and support our comprehensive waste management:

Keeping resources in circulation:

  • Separate collection by waste compactors with weighing sluices
  • Solar-powered collection containers with fill level sensors on the mountain
  • Structured separation systems in all catering areas as part of our catering waste management concept
  • Regular inspections of slopes and trails after the snow melts to collect and return materials

Circular economy in practice:

  • Upcycling of advertising tarpaulins into bags, cases and other utility items
  • Areitbahn I was completely dismantled after 29 years, exported and rebuilt in Colombia
  • Focus on durable materials and recycling in all areas

Through these measures, we promote sustainable waste management that conserves resources, increases recycling rates and permanently closes the material cycle – an important contribution to minimising the ecological impact of tourism on the Schmittenhöhe.
