Sustainable travel and mobility offers around the Schmitten

EV charging stations, tips for resource-saving travel and more

By car, bus or train: The Schmittenhöhe is easily accessible by any means of transport. Guests who attach importance to an environmentally friendly way to travel can also get there quickly and easily without a car.

Resource-saving travel

For guests arriving by electric car, there are a number of EV charging stations in Zell am See. In addition, there are charging stations directly at the car parks of selected accommodation options. An overview is available on request from Zell am See – Kaprun Tourismus.

EV charging stations at the cable car valley stations:

  • areitXpress car park
  • SMATRICS charging station in the town hall garage near the cityXpress

Tip: On the website of Zell am See – Kaprun, you will find an overview of all EV charging stations, which is constantly being updated.

If you would like to travel to Zell’s landmark mountain using public transport, we recommend the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and the German Railways (DB).

Environmentally friendly mobility options on site

After the journey is before the next trip – ideally, by public transport. In summer or winter, many attractive offers invite guests to travel around the region without their own car:

  • From May to November, the mobility card supports unlimited enjoyment of nature. And of course, there are also numerous charging stations for e-bikes in the Zell am See – Kaprun region.
  • On the initiative of the Schmittenhöhebahn AG, a stop was built directly at the areitXpress valley station. This allows guests to get there directly from the train station in Zell am See using the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn train. All other valley stations are easily accessible with the regional bus lines of the Salzburg Transport Association.
  • In winter, the ski pass also serves as a ticket for free use of the regional ski buses.

Car-free travel around the Schmitten is perfectly possible. However, as a KEM region (Climate and Energy Model Region), Zell am See – Kaprun wants to go one step further. The goal is to become the first CO2-neutral tourism region in the Alps where visitors can enjoy car-free holidays. Measures to contribute to the achievement of the goal are the deepening of the cooperation with ÖBB and DB as well as the expansion of the public bus network.

The energy-efficient way to win the summit

There is also a sustainable way to reach the Schmitten’s summit: taking the cityXpress. Thanks to the photovoltaic systems at the mountain and valley stations, the energy for every fourth trip up the mountain is produced by the cable car facility itself.

Interesting: In the area of energy management, the construction of additional PV systems is one of the activities already being implemented by Schmittenhöhebahn AG.
